Welcome to another round of the One Room Challenge! This time in my favorite season. 🍂 I’m so excited to be joining once again, and it’s great to see so many of the same (and new!) faces. Follow along as I transform our seldom-used guest bath into a bold, modern retreat I may actually want to take baths in, and a room we’ll finally be excited to walk past!
I’d like to rename this bathroom in it’s ‘Before’ state the “Bathroom Full of Things We Just Love.” Almond paint! A textured ceiling! 80’s vanity lights and 90’s faux light pine cabinets! I’M KIDDING, of course.
Ahhhh, at least we can look at it as a walk down memory lane right? For me, the words that come to mind are more along the lines of “ugh” and “the 20th century called and wants it’s style back.” But hey, more fun for me! And you!
The Design Board
Compared to the Spring ORC, this time I didn’t have as much pictorial inspiration per se, and more of just an organic “vision” if you will. The existing Van Gogh “Almond Blossoms” print (oh, the irony!) was more of my inspiration. Then I saw the wall color, and then the rug, and it just began unfolding from there, with touches of matte black, copper and amber glass to follow.
The Before
Despite its setbacks, many of the things in this bathroom will actually stay. I purchased the shower curtain when we moved in last December, and created the DIY foliage prints a few months back. The organic woven accents I adore (the towel basket belonged to my parents circa the 70’s), and the hanging bird votive was a gift from my sister years ago. At first, they just ended up here, but now I see they were meant to be here all along.
Recently I was also gifted the amazing copper Capri Blue candle from my sister, and the beautiful carved wooden box from my mother, both for my birthday last month. They too aided in the inspiration for this space!
Keeping in mind that we rent this place (I forget sometimes 😂), only so much can be or should be done responsibly. I still need to get permission to paint the vanity as that’s totally permanent, and I didn’t want to break the bank with this reno. In a perfect world, there would be a window or skylight in this space, and I could strip the textured ceiling… but hey, I’d also like an Oscar on my mantel while we’re dreaming.
Speaking of renting, can yall PLEASE look at how our landlord “fixed” the toilet paper holder?? Thankfully, he is always very appreciative and complimentary of my renovations to this home!
The Plan
- paint walls Benjamin Moore Dragonfly
- (hopefully!) paint the vanity a soft gray
- install a new modern black light fixture
- add new vanity knobs and wooden “legs”
- “tile” the vanity backsplash using these
- replace the bathmat with this vintage-inspired rug
- paint the shower curtain rod a matte black
- find copper switch + electrical plates
- restyle!
